Benefits to employers

As an employer it's important to identify and acknowledge the skills and knowledge that your employees have. This enables you to maximise their strengths and get the most from your production team. Many employees acquire their skills in the workplace, or even outside work, without undergoing formal training. In these cases they may be eligible to apply for RPL.

RPL is the acknowledgement by a Registered Training Organisation
(RTO) that an employee has gained an appropriate level of skills and knowledge that would otherwise have been developed by undertaking a training program.

There are various benefits for employers in assisting employees to seek recognition of their skills through RPL. These include:

  • fast tracking workers through the skills recognition process
  • reduction in costs of training
  • reduction in down-time while workers are in training
  • efficient identification of 'skills gaps' allowing for more focussed training

The best way to help your employees to have their skills acknowledged through the RPL process is to contact an RTO and ask them to come in and discuss the requirements with the workers involved. To find a suitable RTO go to the National Training Information Service website. A link is provided on the 'Contacts for more information' page.

As the employer you will also be able to assist your workers gain recognition for their skills through providing:

  • third party reports
  • job descriptions
  • employment records
  • records of on-the-job training already provided
