Recognising your skills in the furnishing industry

If you have been working in the furnishing industry for a while, or have gained skills in another industry, you may be able to get those skills recognised without having to enrol in a formal course. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning, or RPL.

RPL is a form of assessment that acknowledges the skills and knowledge you have gained through:

  • formal training received at work or through a training provider
  • on-the-job experience at work
  • life experience, through your hobbies or other outside activities.

The important thing you need to show when you apply for RPL is whether you have the skills required, not how or when or where you learned them. This is done through demonstrating your skills to an assessor, who then makes a decision as to whether you have satisfied the requirements of the units of competence.

Once you have been assessed as ‘competent’ in those skills, you can have them acknowledged in a Statement of Attainment, and also counted towards a qualification.

This resource is not an assessment tool but it will help you to work out which skills you may be able to apply for RPL in, and provide examples of the types of evidence that you will need to gather to demonstrate that you’re competent. Remember that the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) will specify the actual evidence that you will need to present for your RPL application.

Once you have confirmed what skills and knowledge you already have, you should contact the RTO to discuss the practical demonstration requirements, and other evidence you will need. They will also be able to advise you on any 'gap' training you may need to fulfil the requirements of the qualification that you are seeking.
