RPL glossary of terms

Term Definition

Assessment

The process of gathering evidence to demonstrate competence.

Critical aspects of evidence

All of the elements of the task that the assessor must see to satisfy themselves that the candidate is competent.

Competence

The ability to do a task to the required standard. This is often a mix of knowledge, technical skill, understanding and problem solving in a workplace situation.

Elements

The key activities of a unit of competency.

Nationally recognised qualification

A formal certification that is recognised nationally and awarded under the Australian Qualifications Framework for the achievement of competencies.

Performance criteria

The standards of performance expected of a skill.

Registered Training Organisations (RTO)

An organisation registered to issue nationally recognised qualifications or statements of attainment for units of competency. This is the organisation that offers you recognition and assists you through the process.

Statement of Attainment

A statement to say you have achieved part of a qualification. You may not need a whole qualification, depending on your job, so a statement of attainment may be more relevant to you.

Unit of competency

A particular skill that makes up part of a workplace activity or job and the standard of performance and knowledge required.
