Flooring Technology Website

The original ‘Flooring Technology’ resource was developed by Workspace Training in a series of WELL Projects – funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Workplace English Language and Literacy Program.

When the WELL Program was abolished in the 2014 federal budget, the development work stopped and management of the site was transferred to Manufacturing Skills Australia.

The Training Package (LMF02) that the resources were aligned to has since been superseded by the MSF Training Package and the original material has now become obsolete.

In order to continue with the development of new units and updating of existing units, Workspace Training formed an organisation called INTAR (Industry Network Training and Assessment Resources) to enable TAFE colleges, industry RTOs and other interested parties to fund the work directly through ‘subscriptions’.

The current Flooring Technology website can be found at flooringtech.org

About this resource

This project won the award for ‘Excellence in a learning resource’ in the 2014 Australian Institute of Training and Development Awards, announced on 16 October 2014.

The website provides learning materials, self-check exercises and assignments to support a range of competencies from the Certificate III in Flooring Technology.

The text is written in plain English and there is extensive use of photos and line drawings. Each paragraph of main content has a ‘play’ button which allows the user to play the voice-over narration and see an enlarged version of the photo for that paragraph. There are also other presentation options available, including a ‘Slideshow’ version which shows full-sized images and plays the voice as a continuous narration.

The ‘lesson’ pages contain learning activities to reinforce the concepts presented, and there are assignments at the end of each section that can be used for assessment purposes. Interactive exercises are also used throughout the resource, including self-check quizzes, questionnaires, and drag-and-drop style activities.

The overall objective of the resource is to help learners to acquire the underpinning knowledge needed to satisfy the theoretical components of these units. This will assist them when they undertake the practical training on-site. Although the resource is designed specifically for learners with literacy or numeracy difficulties, it is suitable for any apprentices or trainees undertaking the Flooring Technology course.
