Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Introduction
If you have been working in the timber industry for a while, or have gained skills in another industry, you may be able to get those skills recognised without having to complete a formal course. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning, or RPL.
RPL is a form of assessment that acknowledges the skills and knowledge you have gained through:
- formal training received at work or through a training provider
- on-the-job experience at work
- life experience, through your hobbies or other outside activities.
The important thing you need to show when you apply for RPL is that you have the skills required, not how or when or where you learned them. By demonstrating your skills to an assessor, you will be able to show that you have met the requirements of the units of competency. Once you have been assessed as competent in those skills, you can be issued with a Statement of Attainment, and also have the competencies counted towards a qualification.
