Verbal reports

Verbal reports allow the two-way transmission of information, which makes it easy to check on details or clarify and queries. However, if one or both of the people in the conversation are in a hurry, some of the message can get lost along the way.

Below are some helpful techniques for ensuring that the verbal reports you receive from others are timely and accurate:

• ask questions if you don't fully understand what you're being told, or aren't sure whether you are hearing a reliable version of events
• provide positive body language signals, such as nodding to indicate when you understand
• avoid making assumptions until you hear the whole story, and try to allow as much time for the conversation as the other person needs to state their case.
