Arris |
Intersection of the face and edge of a piece of timber. |
Bearer |
Floor framing member that supports the floor joists. |
Bottom jack studs |
Short studs between the sill trimmer and bottom plate, used to support the sill trimmer and provide fixing for linings. |
Bottom plate |
The horizontal member at the bottom of a wall frame, used to secure the bottom of the studs. |
Double top plate |
Two top plates, usually of the same size, nailed one on top of the other to provide extra strength to the top plate. |
Head trimmer |
Horizontal member above an opening, providing fixing for the top jack studs. |
Jamb stud |
Stud placed either side of an opening. |
Joist |
Floor framing member that sits on the bearers and supports the flooring material. |
Lintel |
Also called head. Beam over a framed opening, carrying a load applied from above. |
Load bearing wall |
A wall designed to carry a load from above. |
Member |
A timber component in a wall frame that performs a structural function. |
Metal angle brace |
Metal strip that runs at an angle across a wall frame, designed to stop the frame from distorting longitudinally. |
Nogging |
Short horizontal member fixed between studs to stop them from flexing sideways under a load. |
Non-loadbearing wall |
A wall that is not designed to carry a load from above. Also called a 'partition wall'. |
Sill trimmer |
Horizontal member immediately under a window opening, providing fixing for bottom jack studs. |
Stud |
Vertical framing member between the top and bottom plates. |
Top jack studs |
Short studs between the lintel and top plate, used to support the top plate and provide fixing for linings. |
Top plate |
The horizontal member at the top of a wall frame, used to secure the top of the studs. |
Trench |
Housing designed to take the end of another member. Typically used in top and bottom plates to locate the studs. |
