Unit introduction
Good strong management is at the centre of every business. One of the key aspects of successful management is the ability to take a step back, observe the way the business is operating, and ask: 'Is our current system doing the job properly, or are there aspects that can be improved?'.
This is the process of monitoring and reviewing the operations of the business, and the best site supervisors and managers do it as a normal part of their daily activities.
This unit is designed for supervisors and managers in the following sectors of the timber industry:
- Forest growing and management
- Harvesting and haulage.
Although it is broadly suitable for anyone with managerial responsibilities, it has been specifically developed for people undertaking the competency FPICOR4202A: Monitor and review forestry operations, which is a core competency in the Certificate IV in Forest Operations.
Forestry supervisors and managers are employed on both sides of the fence. You might work for a forestry company or harvesting contractor – or you might work for a government agency responsible for regulating and overseeing the forestry operation. Either way, you'll be closely involved with both the workers on the ground and the senior managers in your organisation.
One of the attributes you will need to bring to the job is the ability to combine a 'big picture' view of your organisation's objectives with a 'nuts and bolts' understanding of work procedures. The material presented in this unit will help you to develop these skills and undertake the assessment requirements for FPICOR4202A. Your trainer will talk to you about the assessment criteria, such as the assignments you will need to complete and any other evidence you may have to collect.
