Introduction
It is now common practice for an occupational health and safety (OHS) officer to be given the added responsibility of managing environmental compliance. As a result, the job title for a safety officer now often reads 'OHS&E' or 'HS&E' or simply 'SHE' officer.
In this unit, we have chosen the abbreviation SH&E to refer to 'safety, health and environment'.
Safety, health and environmental policies and procedures have become increasingly complex in recent years. Newly introduced laws, regulations and codes of practice are aiming to improve the accountability of organisations, and provide clearer benchmarks for acceptable performance. Organisations need to ensure their on-site policies and procedures keep pace with these changes to ensure compliance.
Many organisations combine safety management and environmental management into one portfolio in an 'integrated management system' (IMS). There are employment opportunities for workers whose skills embrace the various aspects of SH&E compliance.
This unit addresses the responsibilities of site supervisors and managers who need to monitor their organisation's SH&E policies and procedures. It is aligned to the unit of competency FPICOR4201A: Monitor safety, health and environment policies and procedures, which is a core unit in all Certificate IV qualifications from the Forest and Forest Products Industry Training Package (FPI05).
