The Timber Plus Toolbox supports nine competencies from the Forest and Forest Products Training Package (FPI05). These are described below.
Caring for the environment
Provides learners with the background knowledge needed to carry out their work in an environmentally responsible way and recognise basic environmental hazards.

Preventing fires
Provides an overview of the types of fires that may occur in timber workplaces and describes methods for reducing the risk of a fire outbreak.

Core competency in Certificates II in: Forest growing and management; Harvesting and haulage
Group C elective in other qualifications, but still widely used in workplaces where fire hazards have high relevance

Working safely
Covers the basic principles of occupational health and safety for timber workers.

Maintaining product quality
Covers the basic principles of maintaining and monitoring the quality of an employee's own output and ensuring that the products they handle are treated with due care.

Grading structural softwoods
Provides learners with background information on the process of visual stress grading and an overview of the F grade system. It includes descriptions of the most common softwood characteristics that need to be identified and methods used to measure them and assess their grade.

Group B elective in Certificates II in: Sawmilling and processing; Timber manufactured products; and Certificates III in: Sawmilling and processing; Timber manufactured products

Using hand-held tools
Covers the safe and efficient operation of the hand and power tools that are commonly used in the timber industry such as hammers, drills, circular saws and nail guns.
Unit of competency: FPICOT2219A: Use hand held tools
Group C elective, but widely used in most Certificate II and III qualifications because of its relevance to OHS when using hand and power tools

Assembling wall frames
Covers the basic principles of wall frame manufacture and the functions of the different parts of a wall frame.

Group B elective in Certificate III in Timber manufactured products

Laying up roof trusses
Covers the basic principles of roof truss design, methods of manufacture and the functions of the different trusses.

Selecting timber
Covers the principles of wood technology and the background knowledge needed by workers involved in choosing the most appropriate timber species for various end-uses and customer needs.

Core competency in Certificates III in: Saw doctoring; Wood machining
Group C elective in other qualifications, but widely used wherever learners need to know the principles of wood technology – note that this unit provides much of the background knowledge needed for units that deal with the activities of processing, manufacturing, storing or selling timber.
