How the recognition process works
Set out below is the step-by-step process of applying for RPL.
1. Identify your skills
You can identify your existing skills by going to the RPL checklist for individual units of competency. You can also see the full unit of competency by following the links on that page.
2. Prepare the evidence
There are various types of evidence that your assessor may ask you to provide to demonstrate your competence. To see examples of the sorts of things your assessor may ask for, go to the Types of acceptable evidence link on the menu bar.
3. Contact your training provider
Your supervisor or manager may contact the Registered Training Provider (RTO) for you, or give you the contact details. To see the full list of RTOs that are able to process your RPL application, you can go straight to the National Training Information Service (NTIS) website.
4. Undertake the assessment
Your assessor will look at the evidence you provide and make a decision on your competence. The evidence may include the "Tasks" contained in this Timber Toolbox.
Discuss the outcome of the assessment process.
The assessor's decision on your competence will either be:
Competent – which means you can receive a Statement of Attainment in that competency, and count it towards a full qualification.
Not yet competent – which will mean that you must improve your level of skill and be re-assessed at some future time. The RTO may provide "gap training" in the areas where you need further instruction and practice.
More evidence needed – where you will be asked to provide additional evidence to support your application.
