Case study
The case study slideshow has a voice-over sound track. You will need to turn on your speaker to hear the sound. Your browser may also ask you to activate an 'add-on' to play the sound – this instruction will appear in a ribbon at the top of the browser window.
If you are using keyboard commands, use Tab to move through the controls and Enter to play the voice track. The voice-over script is shown in text underneath.

Paul – my job
Transcript
My name's Paul. I work as a mechanic for a haulage company, but I also take on the role of Chief Warden when there's an emergency on-site. -
Internal Checks
Transcript
I carry out site inspections regularly to check for fire hazards. I also do a formal risk assessment every six months. I do that just before each emergency control meeting, so we can see where we're up to, and decide whether everything is up to scratch. -
External Checks
Transcript
We get the fire fighting equipment checked by an external company every six months too. They check the extinguishers, hoses, pumps, alarms and exits, and also give us a report on any hazards they've found. -
Evacuations
Transcript
Once a year I oversee the site evacuation drill, where we go through the full emergency response procedure. We write that up and discuss it at the next emergency control meeting. Then we do a report and send it to the safety committee. -
Training
Transcript
We do refresher training with our Wardens and Emergency Response Team every six months. That keeps us pretty confident that we can handle the first response to an emergency, while we're waiting for the emergency services to arrive and take over.
