Case study
The case study slideshow has a voice-over sound track. You will need to turn on your speaker to hear the sound. Your browser may also ask you to activate an 'add-on' to play the sound – this instruction will appear in a ribbon at the top of the browser window.
If you are using keyboard commands, use Tab to move through the controls and Enter to play the voice track. The voice-over script is shown in text underneath.

Stan – my job
Transcript
Hi, I'm Stan, and as the supervisor on-site, I look after the day to day running of the operation. It's my job to monitor the policies and procedures we've got in place. This includes the EMS, or environmental management system. The basic principles I use to monitor the site are quite simple really. -
Requirements
Transcript
Firstly, I need to be right up to speed on the specific requirements of the EMS, and the impact it has on the way we operate. I'm especially careful with any requirements built into the contracts with subbies and other companies. -
Compliance

I also need to be constantly on the lookout to make sure everyone is doing the right thing. I make sure that the plans are completed before we start any new job, and that everyone has understood them. At the end of each task I check that there haven't been any breaches, and that there's no damage to the environment outside the work area. -
Training
Transcript
I also make sure that everyone involved is properly trained, and knows exactly what their responsibilities are. This includes site inductions and formal training sessions. It also includes on-the-job help for people who aren't familiar with a particular procedure, or are doing a job for the first time. -
Communications
Transcript
And finally I try to keep the lines of communication open with everyone, both up the chain and down the chain. If anyone has any concerns, I like to hear about it straight away, so I can get onto it and do something about it. That way, we can nip little problems in the bud, and stop them from turning into much bigger problems later on.
